History of the Highlander

The First Toyota Highlander arrived on U.S. roadways in 2001, holding five and offering two trim levels. It came with a variety of convenient standard features like cruise control, and it provided a CD player during a time when makers were still transitioning away from analog devices. It also presented options like heated seats, keyless entry, a power moonroof, and leather upholstery.

The Highlander received several updates in 2004, featuring new designs for its headlamps, an attractive new grille, and the option for a third row of seating. Four years later, the second generation was released, now with a larger body a more room in the cabin. Traction control, antilock brakes, and hill start assist all came as standard features. The SUV underwent a mid-generation update in 2017, continuing to develop its distinct looks and performance.
