History of the Toyota 4Runner
Toyota introduced the 4Runner into the North American market for the 1985 model year. The first generation of the 4Runner was a two door configuration and sported a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine under the hood. The vehicle would actually be classified as a compact vehicle by today’s standards, as it did not gain size until later on in its development history.
The second generation of the 4Runner was released for the 1990 model year and was a drastically different vehicle from its predecessor. Rather than being essentially a truck with a cover over the bed, this 4Runner was a completely redesigned vehicle sitting on an independent platform. Toyota also made the decision at this time to begin offering the 4Runner as a four door model in addition to the two door option. It was during this time that the 4Runner began to take the shape of what would be considered a true sport utility vehicle in today’s market.
By 1995, the third generation of the 4Runner was released as a completely redesigned model. Toyota increased the overall size of the 4Runner and began the process of upscaling the interior. This trend continued with the 2002 model 4Runner which, by this time, had begun to gain serious traction in the sport utility market. The 4Runner continued to sell well in the ensuing years as it carved out a niche for itself as both a true off-road vehicle and a desirable option for normal everyday transportation.
A completely new model 4Runner would not arrive until 2010. Toyota placed special emphasis on providing more off-road options with this generation of the 4Runner. The sport utility vehicle continues to this day to be a success for the automaker and a favorite among off-road enthusiasts across the country.
